And The Dolphin’s Blew Bubbles
Than are dreamt of in your philosophy.
-William Shakespeare, “Hamlet”
Today I came across an amazing video from the folks at Sea World. As I lived in southwest Florida for many years, I was a frequent visitor to the this fun and educational park in Orlando. From the Orca whales to the penguins, the animals undoubtedly draw as many visitors as the roller coasters and other rides. The following video show a truly incredible phenomena called Dolphin Bubbles.
It is unclear whether the behavior the dolphins are demonstrating is natural or learned. If it is not a naturally occurring behavior and is indeed a learned behavior, how did the dolphins first learn it? If it is a natural behavior, it is safe to assume that the dolphins learn it from one another. Another question has got to center around the purpose of the behavior. It is unclear whether the behavior is some form of communication, playfulness, or serves another purpose. I found it quite interesting in the video when the narrator said that a normal air bubble would naturally rise in water but that these circular air bubbles sink instead. This would appear to indicate that the dolphins have found a way to manipulate the air bubbles to at the very least play with them for an extended period of time.
